Descent Groups

Topic: Kinship. Syllabus: 2.5 Kinship: Consanguinity and Affinity; Principles and types of descent (Unilineal, Double, Bilateral, Ambilineal); Forms of descent groups (lineage, clan, phratry, moiety and kindred); Kinship terminology (descriptive and classificatory); Descent, Filiation and Complimentary Filiation; Descent and Alliance. Same official PYQ from year-wise 2021 and Kinship.

Revision summary

A descent group is recruited by a rule of ancestry. Unilineal clans and lineages are corporate; kindreds are often not. They organise exogamy, property, office, and feud. Nuer lineages and Trobriand sub-clans are type cases. Descent is not the same thing as the domestic family.

Model answer

Introduction

A descent group is a body of kin recruited by a rule of ancestry. It owns names, rights, and often land. It is not the same as a household.

Body

Types

  • Unilineal groups are patrilineal or matrilineal. Nuer lineages and Trobriand dala are classic cases.
  • Cognatic and bilateral kindreds, common in the West and among some hill peoples, recruit through both sides but often lack a single corporate estate.
  • Clans, lineages, moieties, and phratries are scales of the same idea. A clan may be totemic and exogamous.

Functions

  • They regulate marriage through exogamy, as Lévi-Strauss and Dumont read alliance between groups.
  • They hold property, office, and feud. Evans-Pritchard made the lineage the political unit of the Nuer.
  • Ancestors and ritual legitimate the group. Morgan earlier mistook clan for a stage of the family; the group is a jural corporation, not a household type.

Limit

  • People also live in houses and networks. Descent is one idiom of belonging, not the whole of kinship.

Conclusion

Descent groups recruit by ancestry, hold rights, and marry out. Nuer, Trobriand, and Indian gotra-clan talk remain the teaching set.

  • Is a caste a descent group?

A gotra or lineage inside a caste may be. The caste as a whole is a ranked, often endogamous category, not one ancestor group.

  • Can one belong to two descent groups?

In unilineal systems, usually one. Double descent and cognatic systems allow more than one claim.

Theoretical significance of Purum kinship-system.

Kinship

The Purum are a Kuki-Chin group used by Needham as a test case for alliance theory. The claim was prescriptive marriage to mother’s brother’s daughter, with wife-givers and wife-takers in a cycle. Needham argued against Homans and Schneider: the pattern is structure, not sentiment. The case mattered because it took elementary structures beyond Australia and clarified prescription versus preference. Ackerman and others showed that the tables did not seal the cycle as neatly as the model. The lasting names are Lévi-Strauss, Needham and the model–practice gap.

Critically discuss A.L. Kroeber's contribution to kinship studies.

Kinship

Kroeber’s 1909 paper treated classificatory kinship as linguistic-cultural, not as a primitive stage. Eight principles generate terminological pattern. Kinship sits in the superorganic, not in raw biology or psychology. California ethnography supplied cases inside Boasian culture history. Lévi-Strauss wanted alliance, Schneider wanted to question the genealogical grid. Kroeber remains the terms-as-culture charter, not the whole of kinship theory.

Q3(a) · UPSC Mains 2016 · Anthropology GS 1 · 20 marks

Describe the cardinal points of descent and alliance theories.

Kinship

Descent theory centres unilineal groups, property, and segmentation. Fortes and Evans-Pritchard are the African type authors. Alliance theory centres the incest rule and spouse exchange. Lévi-Strauss and Dumont are the type authors. North Indian gotra and south Indian cross-cousin rules show both logics.
