What are the Emerging concerns on women's reproductive health ?

Topic: Population Dynamics. Syllabus: Population Dynamics: Population size, growth, composition and distribution; Components of population growth: birth, death, migration; Population policy and family planning; Emerging issues: ageing, sex ratios, child and infant mortality, reproductive health. Same official PYQ from year-wise 2017 and Population Dynamics.

Revision summary

Concerns have moved from birth targets to consent, safety, and maternal survival. Sex selection and son preference make health a gender-caste issue. Informal work and infection add risks beyond fertility. Private commodification and public PHC failure split women by class. TFR decline is not reproductive equality.

Model answer

Copper italics in this answer — like this — are the key facts. Each one is unpacked in the Facts & figures rail.

Introduction

Women’s reproductive health in India is no longer only a story of too many births. Emerging concerns are quality of care, son preference, informal work, HIV and RTIs, and the body’s control by family and state. Fertility decline has not equalised health.

Body

From target to body

  • Older family-planning targets treated women as numbers. Concerns now include contraceptive safety, sterilisation camps, and informed consent.
  • Maternal death, anaemia, and unsafe abortion remain, especially for rural and slum poor.

Emerging clusters

  • Sex-selective technology and DEMARU-type low child sex ratios make reproduction a site of missing girls.
  • Leela Dube’s Seed and Earth still decides whose pregnancy is celebrated.
  • Informal and night work, plus delayed marriage in the new middle class, bring new infertility and occupational risks.
  • HIV, reproductive tract infections, and poor postnatal care sit outside a ‘two-child’ slogan.
  • Surrogacy and urban private clinics commodify reproduction for some while PHCs fail others.

Sociological core

  • Health is stratified by caste, class, and region. A national TFR fall can hide Dalit and Adivasi maternal risk.

Conclusion

Emerging concerns are consent, missing girls, infection, work, and unequal clinical quality. Reproductive health is a citizenship issue, not only a population project. The woman’s body remains a field of family honour and state targets.

  • Has family planning solved reproductive health?

It cut fertility for many. It did not guarantee safe contraception or maternal survival for the poor.

  • Is urban private care the answer?

It serves paying women. It can also push unnecessary procedures and ignore slum women.

Draw the current population pyramid of India. What policy measures would you recommend for population dynamics to achieve sustainability?

Population Dynamics

India's population pyramid is transitioning from an expansive base to a constrictive or urn-shaped demographic structure, characterised by a bulge in the working-age cohort (15–64 years). This demographic dividend offers a unique window of economic opportunity, but also necessitates targeted interventions in health, education, and social security. To achieve demographic sustainability, policy measures must shift away from coercive population control toward human capital enhancement, gender parity, and geriatric care. Key strategies include expanding vocational training, improving female labour force participation, and strengthening institutional frameworks for the elderly. Ultimately, aligning population dynamics with sustainable development requires a rights-based approach focused on quality of life rather than mere numerical targets.

How same sex marriages are responsible for population dynamics in India? Discuss

Population Dynamics

Navtej Johar decriminalised consensual same-sex relations; Supriyo did not create a right to marry. National fertility and population growth are driven by education, contraception and urban costs. Any demographic effect of same-sex unions is small because numbers are small and many still enter heterosexual marriage. The clearer effects are on household form, inheritance gaps and kinship ideology. Serious analysis avoids both moral panic and the claim that queer marriage will reshape India’s age structure.
