Interpretative understanding seeks the meaning of action for the actor. Max Weber named it verstehen. It is important because rates without meaning are thin. It is limited because meaning is not a private feeling that ends the argument.

- Weber defined sociology as interpretative study of social action oriented to others. Motive and intended meaning are part of the object.
- Symbolic interaction, after George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer, treats society as ongoing definition of the situation.
- Clifford Geertz’s thick description and Alfred Schutz’s phenomenology recover the everyday lifeworld that positivist grids skip.
- Indian fieldwork on caste honour, live-in stigma, or SHG talk fails if only cells are read.
What it adds to explanation
- Emile Durkheim’s suicide rates still need why this death was classified and named.
- Policy uptake depends on how people read a scheme, not only on budget lines.
- Validity of meaning rises when the account can be checked against talk, documents, and comparison.
Limitations
- Objectivity is harder. Weber split value-relevance from demonstration, but the researcher’s standpoint still enters, as Sandra Harding warned.
- Small cases do not yield NFHS percentages. Reliability across observers is a fight.
- Structural constraint, which Marx and later Bourdieu stressed, can be missed if every outcome is “meaning”.
- Actors may lie, forget, or use official scripts. Verstehen is not credulity.
- Hidden groups and power make some meanings unsaid. Ann Oakley’s interview as a social relation applies.

- Use interpretation to build types and then test them with comparison and files.
- Do not treat a diary as a Census, or a Census as a mind.
