Why in news

  • The Defence Acquisition Council cleared capital acquisition proposals worth $11.6 billion (approx. ₹91,000 crore) for the Armed Forces.

What is the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)?

  • Highest decision-making body in the Ministry of Defence for capital procurement and acquisitions.
  • Chaired by the Union Defence Minister, it grants Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procurement under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP).

Key Cleared Procurement Items

  • Approved CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) Reconnaissance Vehicles and High Mobility Vehicles for operational troop mobility.
  • Granted AoN for Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Trawl Tanks designed for minefield clearance.

Why it matters

  • Prioritises domestic manufacturing categories under Buy (Indian-IDDM) to enhance indigenous defence production capabilities.
