Verrier Elwin — Baiga, Muria ghotul, Saora, NEFA principles

Books/studies plus numbered NEFA five principles.

Books and studies (shelf)

Verrier Elwin — missionary-turned-anthropologist; tribal India ethnographer and policy adviser.

  • Major field areas: Central India tribes and later North-East (NEFA).
  • Famous works/teaching hooks: Baiga; Muria (ghotul); Saora religion; NEFA policy writing.
  • Tone: protective of tribal culture; early isolationist leanings later tempered toward Nehruvian integration.

Baiga

  • Baiga as shifting cultivators with deep forest–spirit bond.
  • Bewar (shifting cultivation) central to livelihood and cosmology.
  • Colonial forest policy and 'civilising' pressure as disruption themes.

Examples

  • Baiga: ecology + belief + livelihood as one package (prefigures NMS-style thinking).

Muria and the ghotul

  • Ghotul: youth dormitory among Muria (and related Gond groups) — socialisation, song, courtship norms.
  • Elwin read ghotul as institution of education and regulated sexuality, not 'licence'.
  • Colonial / reformist moral panic vs anthropological defence of indigenous institutions.

Examples

  • Quote ghotul when asked for tribal youth organisation or Muria ethnography.

Saora religion

  • Saora (Sora) ethnography emphasises shamanism, ancestor/spirit communication.
  • Religion as everyday therapy and social repair, not only 'belief'.
  • Useful contrast with Sacred Complex (Hindu pilgrimage) vs tribal spirit worlds.

NEFA 5

NEFA five principles (numbered)

Integrationist ethos for tribal areas — develop with dignity; often linked to Nehru–Elwin line.

  1. People should develop along the lines of their own genius; avoid imposing alien patterns.
  2. Tribal rights in land and forest should be respected.
  3. Train and build a team of their own people for administration and development.
  4. Do not over-administer or overwhelm with a multiplicity of schemes.
  5. Judge results by quality of human character evolved — not by spend statistics alone.
