Leela Dube — seed and earth, gender, Kalpeni matriliny

Seed–earth ideology, gender construction, Kalpeni + Islam.

Seed and earth

Metaphor for how kinship ideology naturalises gender — male as seed, female as earth/field.

  • Seed (purusha principle): active, identity-giving, claims over children/descent.
  • Earth/field (prakriti): receptive, nurturing — labour recognised less as 'identity'.
  • Once installed culturally, legitimises patrilineal claims over persons and often property.
  • Gender is constructed through kinship practice, not merely added on biology.

Examples

  • Use seed–earth when question links gender + kinship ideology + property.

Construction of gender

  • Gender built via kinship rules, residence, inheritance, ritual purity and work allocation.
  • Women's agency exists inside constraints — not only victims, not free choosers.
  • Cross-cultural Indian cases show multiple gender scripts (patriliny, matriliny, Islam, tribe).

Kalpeni — matriliny and Islam

  • Kalpeni (Lakshadweep): matriliny historically organised residence and property.
  • Islam shapes religious life without mechanically wiping matrilineal descent overnight.
  • Breaks stereotype that 'Muslim = always patrilineal Arab kinship template'.
  • Religion and descent system do not dictate each other one-to-one.

Examples

  • Kalpeni = gender + Islam + matriliny in one Mains frame.

Patrilineal ideology (seed–earth)

  • Descent through men
  • Women as field/receptacle
  • Children belong to father's line

Kalpeni matriliny

  • Property/residence via women's line historically
  • Islam + matriliny coexisted
  • Counters one-script Islam stereotype
