Given below are two statements, one is labelled asAssertion (A) :and the other as Reason (R).Assertion (A):Many Sanskrit works on music were translated into Persian during the medieval period.Reason (R):The early Chisti Sufis were fond of musical assemblies called 'sama'.Select the correct answer from the codes given below:

A Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
B Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
C (A) is true, but (R) is false.
D (A) is false, but (R) is true.

Correct answer: (b) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

Explanation

  1. A

Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

Both statements are true, but Chishti fondness for sama does not by itself explain why Sanskrit music treatises were translated into Persian. Courtly Indo-Persian culture and patronage are the wider cause. So (R) is not the correct explanation. This option is not the key.

  2. B

Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

Sanskrit works on music were indeed rendered into Persian in the medieval period, and early Chishtis did hold sama assemblies. The second fact does not cause the first: translation was a broader court and scholarly fashion. Both true, (R) not explaining (A), is the official key.

  3. C

    (A) is true, but (R) is false.

    (A) is true, so this option which makes (A) true and (R) false fails because (R) is also true. This option is therefore wrong.

  4. D

    (A) is false, but (R) is true.

    (A) is not false. This option is not the key.

Summary. Official key is (b) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A). Indo-Persian courts translated Indic musicology; Chishti sama is a separate Sufi practice of listening to music. Sama helps explain Sufi attitudes to music, not the translation programme as such. Only (b) fits both truth-values and the causal gap.
