What it is
- In a total lunar eclipse the full Moon passes through Earth’s umbra, the dark central shadow.
- Direct white sunlight is blocked. Rays that graze Earth go through a long air path; blue light scatters (Rayleigh scattering) and red-orange light is refracted into the umbra.
- That red glow lights the lunar disc, so observers call it a Blood Moon. Dust from volcanoes or pollution can deepen the red.
When it happens
- Geometry: Sun, Earth, and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with Earth in the middle — only possible at Full Moon.
- Not every Full Moon eclipses, because the Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees to the ecliptic; the Moon must be near a lunar node.
- Totality can last up to roughly one hundred minutes; partial and penumbral stages look grey, not blood-red.
- Blood Moon is therefore a weather-and-dust-tinted total lunar eclipse, not an astrological object and not a solar eclipse (which happens at New Moon).
