Climate as the first control
- Temperature and rainfall decide the speed of chemical weathering, leaching, and evaporation, so latitudinal and monsoon belts produce characteristic soils.
- Hot wet climates form laterite and latosol with iron-aluminium enrichment, as in the Western Ghats and parts of Odisha; vegetation there tends toward tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest.
- Cold climates slow decay and create podzols under coniferous taiga; arid climates produce sierozem and desert soils under xerophytes, as in the Thar.
Soil as the medium of vegetation
- Soil texture, pH, humus, and depth decide which plants can root: alluvial loams of the Ganga plain support intensive agriculture once the summer monsoon and canal irrigation supply water.
- Black cotton soils (regur) of the Deccan trap hold moisture and suit cotton and sorghum in a semi-arid monsoon climate.
- Mountain soils are thin and acidic under oaks and pines in the Himalaya; over-grazing or road cuts expose them to landslide once the canopy goes.
Vegetation as a return influence
- Forest litter builds mull or mor humus and protects the A-horizon from rain splash; the Chipko insight and later joint forest management rest on this physical fact.
- Grasslands such as the steppes build chernozem through dense roots; if climate dries or ploughing is continuous, the same soil blows, as in historical Dust Bowl and in over-cultivated drylands.
- Evapotranspiration from forest canopies moistens local air; Amazon and Western Ghats debates treat vegetation as a climate actor, not only a climate result.
- Human land use — shifting cultivation, Green Revolution irrigation, and plantation monoculture — can break the loop, salinising soils or replacing mixed forest with tea or oil palm.
