Revision summary
Bundelkhand is a granite–Vindhyan upland south of the Yamuna, split between UP and MP. Ken, Betwa, Dhasan, and Pahuj drain a drought-prone hard-rock plateau. Bundeli speech and the Alha–Udal epic cross the State line. Khajuraho, Orchha, Chitrakoot, Kalinjar, and Jhansi are the cultural nodes on that stone. Tanks, ravines, and the Ken–Betwa idea are the hydrological signature of the region.
Model answer
Introduction
- Bundelkhand is a cultural region before it is a single State unit: a granite–gneiss and Vindhyan upland south of the Yamuna, speaking Bundeli, and remembering Chandela, Bundela, and Jhansi polities. A geographical account must map that plateau, its rivers, drought ecology, and the temples and forts that make the culture visible.
Body
Terrain, water, and the two-State map
- Physiographically it is the Bundelkhand upland: Bundelkhand granite in Lalitpur–Jhansi–Tikamgarh, Vindhyan sandstone scarps toward Panna–Chitrakoot, and Yamuna–Chambal beehad ravines on the northern lip.
- Drainage is south-west to north-east into the Yamuna through the Betwa, Ken, Pahuj, Dhasan, and Baghain; the proposed Ken–Betwa link is a hydrological reply to the same drought plateau.
- Rainfall is modest and erratic (roughly 80–110 cm), with a hard-rock, low-storage aquifer, which produced the historical tank (bundela talab) landscape and today’s drought-package politics.
- In Uttar Pradesh the core districts are Jhansi, Lalitpur, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Banda, and Chitrakoot; in Madhya Pradesh, Datia, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Sagar, and Damoh complete the cultural oval.
Culture on that geography
- Bundeli (a Western Hindi dialect) and the Alha–Udal oral epic are the linguistic glue; they do not stop at the UP–MP line, which is why the region is cultural rather than administrative.
- Chandela Khajuraho (Nagara temples, 10th–11th centuries) and the Bundela capitals of Orchha and Datia sit on the same plateau stone; Chitrakoot’s Ramayana landscape and Kalinjar fort join sacred and military geography.
- Jhansi, the 1857 centre of Rani Lakshmibai, and the medieval forts of Ajaygarh and Kalinjar show how the upland commanded the route between the Malwa and the Ganga Doab.
- Folk painting, stone craft, and diamond memory at Panna (MP) plus granite and pyrophyllite on the UP side make economy and culture share the same geology; the region remains rainfed, out-migrant, and tank-and-check-dam agrarian.

Conclusion
Bundelkhand as a cultural region is the granite–Vindhyan plateau between Ken and Betwa, Bundeli speech, Chandela–Bundela stone, and a drought hydrology that tanks and now interlinking try to manage. Geography here is dialect plus scarp, not a district list alone.

-
Is Bundelkhand only in Uttar Pradesh?
No. It is a cross-border cultural region. UP holds Jhansi–Banda–Chitrakoot; MP holds Khajuraho–Orchha–Panna–Sagar. The question asks for a cultural geography, not one State’s districts.
-
Why is it called a drought region if the Yamuna is nearby?
The upland is hard rock with flashy seasonal rivers. Proximity to the Yamuna ravines does not give reliable rabi irrigation across the granite; tanks and deep fractures do.

Post-independence consolidation
Patel and V. P. Menon ran the States Department from July 1947. The Instrument of Accession covered defence, external affairs, and communications. Most rulers were persuaded with privy purses and Rajpramukh rank; unions preceded 1950. Junagadh was settled by plebiscite; Hyderabad by Operation Polo in September 1948. Describe the role of Buddhist literature in the creation of world peace.
Indian culture
The Dhammapada and Metta Sutta teach that hatred is not ended by hatred and that goodwill is a social duty. Jatakas and kingship suttas tie peace to just rule and the removal of poverty. Ashoka’s edicts after Kalinga turn canonical ahimsa into dhamma-vijaya. The Tripitaka and Mahayana sutras travelled across Asia as a shared ethic. UN Vesak and modern engaged Buddhism reuse that literature as a peace language.

Mahatma Gandhi represents the middle-path approach in Indian politics. Give logical explanation.
Freedom struggle
Gandhi stood between revolutionary violence and purely legal Council politics. Satyagraha and the Constructive Programme were that method, from Champaran to the Salt March. Trusteeship refused both laissez-faire capitalism and Bolshevik seizure. He used religious idiom without accepting communal two-nation logic or caste untouchability. The middle path has caste-and-class limits, yet it is a distinct third way, not empty centrism.
