Revision summary
The Dhammapada and Metta Sutta teach that hatred is not ended by hatred and that goodwill is a social duty. Jatakas and kingship suttas tie peace to just rule and the removal of poverty. Ashoka’s edicts after Kalinga turn canonical ahimsa into dhamma-vijaya. The Tripitaka and Mahayana sutras travelled across Asia as a shared ethic. UN Vesak and modern engaged Buddhism reuse that literature as a peace language.
Model answer
Introduction
Buddhist literature is not only a monastic canon; the Sutta Pitaka, Dhammapada, Jatakas, and later Mahayana sutras teach a public ethic of non-harm. That ethic has been used, from Ashoka’s edicts to Vesak at the United Nations, as a vocabulary for peace among states and persons.
Body
Canon: mind, speech, and non-harm
- The Dhammapada opens with the claim that mind precedes all things; hatred is not ended by hatred, which is a direct literary instruction against feud, vendetta, and retaliatory war.
- The Metta Sutta and Karaniya verses ask the reader to radiate goodwill to all beings as a mother to her child, converting private meditation into a social peace practice.
- The Noble Eightfold Path and the Middle Way reject both sensual licence and self-mortification, and, in politics, both nihilist violence and rigid dogma — a literary charter for restraint.
- Jataka stories of the Bodhisattva’s generosity and the Kutadanta and Cakkavatti-sihanada suttas warn kings that crime and war grow from poverty and unjust rule, so peace is an economic and moral duty of the state.
From Ashoka to a world audience
- Ashoka’s Major Rock Edicts, especially edicts IV, XIII, and the Kalinga remorse, translate canonical ahimsa into royal policy: dhamma-vijaya over bherighosa, envoys instead of annexation.
- The Tripitaka travelled with monks along the Silk Road to China, Korea, Japan, and Tibet; translations of the Lotus and Heart sutras fed East Asian cultures that still invoke those texts in anti-war ritual.
- Twentieth-century figures such as the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, and A. T. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya used sutra language of compassion and dependent origination in exile diplomacy, engaged Buddhism, and village peace work.
- The United Nations’ International Day of Vesak (resolution 1999) and UNESCO memory-of-the-world listing of Buddhist manuscripts treat this literature as world heritage for dialogue, not only as Asian religion.

Conclusion
Buddhist literature creates a peace grammar — metta, ahimsa, the Middle Way, and a king’s duty to remove the causes of violence. Ashoka, the trans-Asian canon, and contemporary Vesak diplomacy show that those books still supply a public language when states look for restraint.

-
Is Buddhist literature only about monks leaving the world?
The Vinaya is monastic, but the suttas to kings, the Jatakas, and Ashokan dhamma are explicitly civic. Peace here is a householder and state ethic as well as a path of nirvana.
-
Did Buddhism historically prevent all war?
No. Buddhist kingdoms fought wars. The literature’s role is a persistent moral vocabulary against hatred and conquest, not a magic end to conflict.

Post-independence consolidation
Patel and V. P. Menon ran the States Department from July 1947. The Instrument of Accession covered defence, external affairs, and communications. Most rulers were persuaded with privy purses and Rajpramukh rank; unions preceded 1950. Junagadh was settled by plebiscite; Hyderabad by Operation Polo in September 1948. Administrative merger of armies, currency, and services made accession real.

Mahatma Gandhi represents the middle-path approach in Indian politics. Give logical explanation.
Freedom struggle
Gandhi stood between revolutionary violence and purely legal Council politics. Satyagraha and the Constructive Programme were that method, from Champaran to the Salt March. Trusteeship refused both laissez-faire capitalism and Bolshevik seizure. He used religious idiom without accepting communal two-nation logic or caste untouchability. The middle path has caste-and-class limits, yet it is a distinct third way, not empty centrism.

'Communal violence is instigated by religious fanatics, initiated by anti-social elements, supported by political activists, financed by vested interests.' Comment.
Liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation
The quote correctly names four roles: preacher, goonda, politician, and financier. Rumour and identity insult turn a quarrel into a communal frame. Property, liquor, and contractor money often sit behind the religious label. Police delay and partisan posting can complete the riot system. The reply is equal IPC enforcement and mixed neighbourhoods, not only blaming the four.
