Canon: mind, speech, and non-harm

• The Dhammapada opens with the claim that mind precedes all things; hatred is not ended by hatred, which is a direct literary instruction against feud, vendetta, and retaliatory war.
• The Metta Sutta and Karaniya verses ask the reader to radiate goodwill to all beings as a mother to her child, converting private meditation into a social peace practice.
• The Noble Eightfold Path and the Middle Way reject both sensual licence and self-mortification, and, in politics, both nihilist violence and rigid dogma — a literary charter for restraint.
• Jataka stories of the Bodhisattva’s generosity and the Kutadanta and Cakkavatti-sihanada suttas warn kings that crime and war grow from poverty and unjust rule, so peace is an economic and moral duty of the state.

From Ashoka to a world audience

• Ashoka’s Major Rock Edicts, especially edicts IV, XIII, and the Kalinga remorse, translate canonical ahimsa into royal policy: dhamma-vijaya over bherighosa, envoys instead of annexation.
• The Tripitaka travelled with monks along the Silk Road to China, Korea, Japan, and Tibet; translations of the Lotus and Heart sutras fed East Asian cultures that still invoke those texts in anti-war ritual.
• Twentieth-century figures such as the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, and A. T. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya used sutra language of compassion and dependent origination in exile diplomacy, engaged Buddhism, and village peace work.
• The United Nations’ International Day of Vesak (resolution 1999) and UNESCO memory-of-the-world listing of Buddhist manuscripts treat this literature as world heritage for dialogue, not only as Asian religion.
