Two frames, two problems
Vidyarthi: Sacred Complex for Hindu pilgrimage centres; NMS for tribal ecology–society–belief.
- Both belong to Analytical-phase concept-building.
- Do not mix: Sacred Complex ≠ Nature–Man–Spirit Complex.
Sacred Complex (Gaya) — components
- Sacred geography: places, routes, shrines, tirtha layout.
- Sacred performances: rituals, pilgrimages, offerings, festivals.
- Sacred specialists: priests and ritual functionaries mediating for pilgrims.
- A holy city is a social system — economy + hierarchy + space around sacred value.
Examples

Nature–Man–Spirit (NMS) Complex
- Nature: forest, land, resources, environmental constraint.
- Man: kinship, economy, political offices — social organisation.
- Spirit: religion, witchcraft, ancestors, sacred meanings.
- Change in one leg reworks the others (e.g. forest policy → ritual + kinship stress).
Examples
- NMS = keep ecology and belief inside social analysis.
Restudies
- Later scholars revisited Vidyarthi fields/concepts (Maler restudies in teaching tradition, incl. Pradip Singh line).
- Markets, state schemes, Christianity/reform rearrange the triad.
- Restudies refine/challenge the classic complex — do not only repeat it.
