Sahelanthropus tchadensis (~7–6 mya): Discovered in the Sahel desert of Chad, this fossil is a mosaic of primitive (ape-like) and derived (human-like) traits. Its anteriorly positioned foramen magnum suggests the head was positioned for upright walking.
