Examine the challenges of food security in Uttar Pradesh.

Topic: Land reforms and security in UP. Syllabus: Land Reforms and their impact in UP. Issues related to Security in UP. Cybersecurity and money laundering. Same official PYQ from year-wise 2024 and Land reforms and security in UP.

Revision summary

UP food security is availability, access, utilisation, and stability, not wheat tonnage alone. Western surplus coexists with Bundelkhand drought and eastern flood. NFSA and ONORC still face exclusion, quality, and wage-price gaps. Stunting and anaemia show utilisation failure inside ration households. Climate, storage, and wheat-rice bias in procurement threaten stability.

Model answer

Introduction

Food security in Uttar Pradesh is availability, access, utilisation, and stability for the country’s most populous State. The challenge is not that western UP grows no wheat; it is that Purvanchal and Bundelkhand, nutrition, storage, and last-mile ration still fail many households.

Body

Availability

  • UP is a leading wheat and sugarcane State, with rice in the east and Tarai, yet Bundelkhand remains drought-prone and the east flood-prone, so production is geographically uneven.
  • Sugarcane and some horticulture compete with foodgrain on irrigated land; that is a cropping-pattern challenge, not a slogan against farmers.
  • Climate shocks—heat on wheat, untimely rain, and flood in diara belts—make calorific availability unstable year to year.

Access

  • NFSA ration, Antyodaya, and One Nation One Ration Card are the access architecture; exclusion from lists, biometric failure, and quality grain still block the poorest.
  • Wage and price: rural landless and urban informal workers can starve amid full mandis if inflation in dal, oil, and vegetables outruns wages.
  • Intra-State: western surplus districts do not automatically feed Shravasti or Mahoba without procurement, roads, and FPS discipline.

Utilisation (nutrition)

  • NFHS-type evidence has long shown high child stunting and women’s anaemia in UP; grain in the bag is not food security if diets lack protein, iron, and diverse food.
  • Open defecation leftover, poor WASH, and adolescent marriage cut the biological use of calories.
  • Midday meals and ICDS are utilisation tools; teacher and anganwadi gaps turn them into weak calories.

Stability and systems

  • Storage losses, thin rural godowns, and transport in flood months are stability challenges.
  • Leakage historically haunted PDS; e-PoS and Aadhaar reduced some diversion but created new exclusion errors.
  • Millets, pulses, and milk-egg in schemes are the diversification answer; they fail if procurement stays wheat-rice only.

Examination, not a list

  • The core challenge is a populous, unequal map: surplus west, fragile Bundelkhand, flood east, and a nutrition gap inside NFSA households.
  • Do not cite invented crore food-subsidy figures; examine mechanisms.

Conclusion

UP’s food-security challenge is uneven production, last-mile access, and poor utilisation—stunting and anaemia—not a simple grain shortage in Agra or Meerut. Stability against flood, drought, and heat, plus pulses and decent PDS, is the examination’s close.

Describe the cultural significance of 'Prayagraj' in ancient India.

UP history, civilisation and culture

Ancient Prayaga is the Ganga–Yamuna sangam in today’s Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Puranic mahatmya and the Mahabharata make it a moksha tirtha with the Akshayavat. Kaushambi and the Ashokan pillar tie the belt to Magadha and Vatsa power. Xuanzang records Harsha’s gift-assemblies at the confluence. The site is a shared sacred and royal landscape, not only a later city name.

Write about the major republics located in Uttar Pradesh and their political system in the 6th century B.C.

Political system of UP

Sixth-century UP had ganas and kingdoms on the same Ganga–tarai map. Shakyas of Piprahwa–Kapilavastu and Mallas of Kushinagar are the main republics on UP soil. Koliyas and Moriyas were smaller neighbour sanghas. The system was a kshatriya parishad with a ganamukhya, debate, and limited voting. Kashi, Kosala, and Vatsa were monarchies and must be kept apart.

What was the policy of the British Government towards the Taluqdars of Awadh after the Revolt of 1857?

UP in the freedom struggle

Annexation in 1856 and the summary settlement had pushed Awadh taluqdars into 1857. After the revolt Britain restored them with sanads as estate proprietors. The Oudh Estates Act, 1869, hardened landlord title and succession. Taluqdars became the rural allies of Crown rule around Lucknow. Peasants lost the occupancy tilt of the pre-revolt settlement.
