Revision summary
Rural UP festivals follow rabi–kharif time, vows, and collective food. Holi, Diwali, Chhath, Eid–Muharram, Teej–Kajri, and cattle fairs are the main types. They create artisan and shop demand and time migrant returns. Jajmani and panchayat still use festival days as a social office. Risks are debt, caste exclusion, and procession tension.
Model answer
Introduction
Rural Uttar Pradesh times the year by Holi, Kharif–Rabi harvest rites, Diwali, Eid, Muharram processions, Chhath in the east, Teej, Kajri, and local jatras. Their characteristics are season, vow, and collective food; their socio-economic role is market, credit, caste feast, and sometimes debt.
Body
Characteristics of major rural festivals
- Holi in Braj and western UP is colour, Phool-Dol, and a post-rabi social release; songs and visits reset village kinship for the year.
- Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and cattle blessing tie household Lakshmi rites to livestock, which is still a rural asset.
- Chhath in Purvanchal is a river-and-fast discipline of Shashthi, with strict purity and community ghat labour, not only a private puja.
- Eid and Muharram in Awadh and Rohilkhand villages organise food sharing and tazia processions that cut across a mixed countryside.
- Teej, Kajri, Karva, and Navratri organise women’s songs, fasts, and natal-home visits; Janmashtami in Braj is both temple and village theatre.
- Local melas—Bateshwar, Nauchandi (Meerut), Dadri, and hundreds of cattle fairs—are festivals that are also mandis.
Socio-economic role
- Festivals are rural demand shocks: cloth, gur, jewellery, firecrackers, and animals change hands; artisans and halwais earn a year’s slice in a week.
- Jajmani leftovers still appear as barber, potter, and priest dues at life-cycle plus calendar rites, which redistributes grain and cash inside the village.
- Panchayat, khap, and temple committees use festival days to announce disputes, marriages, and public works, so the fair is a civic hall.
- Migrant labour times return for Holi or Chhath, which brings remittance into the village shop and also crowding on trains.
Limits, stated plainly
- Heavy festival spending can mean moneylender debt after a bad harvest, especially when status competition drives display.
- Caste kitchens and gendered fasts can exclude as well as bind; Dalit access to ghats and temples remains a live rural issue.
- Communal tension can ride on procession routes; the economic fair then needs police as well as pandas.
Elucidation
- Characteristics are seasonal, vow-based, and public. Socio-economic role is market plus social insurance plus status—productive when harvests hold, costly when they do not.

Conclusion
Rural UP festivals are harvest-timed, vow-heavy, and public, from Braj Holi and Purvanchal Chhath to Eid, Diwali, and cattle melas. They move cloth, cattle, remittance, and jajmani dues, and they can also deepen debt and exclusion. That double role is the detailed answer.

Describe the cultural significance of 'Prayagraj' in ancient India.
UP history, civilisation and culture
Ancient Prayaga is the Ganga–Yamuna sangam in today’s Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Puranic mahatmya and the Mahabharata make it a moksha tirtha with the Akshayavat. Kaushambi and the Ashokan pillar tie the belt to Magadha and Vatsa power. Xuanzang records Harsha’s gift-assemblies at the confluence. The site is a shared sacred and royal landscape, not only a later city name.

Write about the major republics located in Uttar Pradesh and their political system in the 6th century B.C.
Political system of UP
Sixth-century UP had ganas and kingdoms on the same Ganga–tarai map. Shakyas of Piprahwa–Kapilavastu and Mallas of Kushinagar are the main republics on UP soil. Koliyas and Moriyas were smaller neighbour sanghas. The system was a kshatriya parishad with a ganamukhya, debate, and limited voting. Kashi, Kosala, and Vatsa were monarchies and must be kept apart.

What was the policy of the British Government towards the Taluqdars of Awadh after the Revolt of 1857?
UP in the freedom struggle
Annexation in 1856 and the summary settlement had pushed Awadh taluqdars into 1857. After the revolt Britain restored them with sanads as estate proprietors. The Oudh Estates Act, 1869, hardened landlord title and succession. Taluqdars became the rural allies of Crown rule around Lucknow. Peasants lost the occupancy tilt of the pre-revolt settlement.
