What are the ethical perversions of private sector? Describe the three options of ethical life.

Topic: Ethics and Human Interface. Syllabus: Ethics and Human Interface — Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human action. Same official PYQ from year-wise 2021 and Ethics and Human Interface.

Revision summary

Private perversions treat persons as means: unpaid wages, deceit, cooked books, capture, and environmental or data harm. They grow when profit is the only test. The three options of ethical life are pleasure or self-interest, duty, and virtue or character. Duty is a rule you could will for all; virtue is a just habit when no auditor is watching. Lawful profit after duty is not a perversion; self-interest alone is the soil of one.

Model answer

Introduction

The private sector creates jobs and goods, and it can also twist a profit into harm. Ethical perversions are those twists. The three options of ethical life are the maps a firm or a person can still choose instead of the twist.

Body

Ethical perversions of the private sector

  • Profit as the only god: a wage unpaid, a safety skipped, or a river used as a drain because the quarter looks better.
  • Consumer deceit: adulteration, false claims, dark patterns on an app, and planned obsolescence dressed as innovation.
  • Labour perversion: contract chains that hide the real employer, child or bonded work in a vendor, and a union-busting file.
  • Tax and books: evasion, round-tripping, related-party siphoning, and accounts that Satyam-style hide the hole.
  • Market capture: cartel bids, insider trading, and buying a licence or a politician instead of competing.
  • Environmental and data harm: illegal effluent, greenwashing, and selling personal data without a real consent.
  • These are perversions because they treat persons as means and the public rule as a cost to be gamed.

Three options of ethical life

  • Option one is the life of pleasure and self-interest: choose what feels good or what maximises private gain. In a firm this is shareholder-only short-termism. It is an option, and it is the soil of the perversions above.
  • Option two is the life of duty: act on a rule you could will for everyone — honest books, safe products, lawful tax, a living wage. Kant’s form and the Gita’s nishkama karma both name this path.
  • Option three is the life of virtue and character: become the kind of agent who is temperate, just, and courageous, so that the right act is a habit, not a loophole search. Aristotle and the Indian idea of nishtha sit here.
  • A workable private ethic mixes duty and virtue: codes, independent directors, and a culture that rewards the true book.
  • Pleasure is not banned; it is ranked. A lawful profit after duty is not a perversion.

How the options answer perversion

  • Self-interest alone will always find a cheaper cruelty.
  • Duty sets a floor the market cannot bid below.
  • Virtue makes the floor hold when the auditor has gone home.

Conclusion

  • Private-sector perversions are profit without duty: deceit, labour theft, cooked books, capture, and harm to nature and data. The three options of ethical life are pleasure, duty, and virtue. A firm that wants a republic as its market must rank duty and character above the quarter.

Rajeev was a migrant labourer. One day, while going on the road on his bicycle, a car pushed his bicycle. Rajeev dragged the driver out of the car and began abusing him. The driver took out a knife and, after stabbing him three or four times, fled. Onlookers delayed taking Rajeev to hospital and, due to excessive bleeding, he died. If you were in place of Rajeev, what would you have done about the driver’s irresponsible driving? People often show indifferent or passive attitude towards such road accidents and accident victims. Discuss its causes and suggest remedies.

Does individual morality have a bearing effect on the decision of public life?

Ethics and Human Interface

Public decisions are signed by persons, so private honesty and restraint shape the file. Integrity is a personal virtue that must appear as a speaking order, not as a slogan. Private creed may not replace equality, impersonality, or statute. Conduct rules punish the private vice that enters the noting. When conscience and duty clash, recusal or resignation is honest; a secret veto is not.

What are the essential virtues which are responsible for an ideal human ethical behaviour according to Mahatma Gandhi? Discuss.

Moral thinkers and philosophers

Gandhi’s ethics is a daily vow, not a speech. Satya, ahimsa, asteya, aparigraha, restraint, and fearlessness are the core. Labour, swadeshi, equal respect for faiths, and the end of untouchability complete the public face. The vows work as one: greed or fear breaks the rest. For a civil servant they mean a truthful noting and non-injury under statute, not a pulpit.

‘Corruption causes misuse of government treasury, administrative inefficiency and obstruction in national development.’ Give suggestions for prevention of corruption in public life in the context of the statement given.

Probity in Governance

Corruption misuses public money, slows honest work, and turns schemes into rent. Prevention cuts discretion through published rules, e-office, and speaking orders. RTI, social audit, DBT, and asset disclosure shrink the dark market. Vigilance and whistle-blower protection must not punish the complainant. Appraisal should reward a reasoned refusal, and political funding must not sell the file from above.
