Eid, Muharram in Lucknow, and Buddha Purnima at Sarnath keep the list plural.
Model answer
Introduction
Uttar Pradesh celebrates the North Indian Hindu calendar at temple towns, plus Nawabi, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, and Christian days in the same cultural region. A mention should name living festivals by place, not a flat national list.
Body
Hindu calendar and sacred towns
- Holi at Mathura–Vrindavan, including Lathmar Holi at Barsana, and Janmashtami at Mathura are Braj peaks.
- Ram Navami and Deepawali-related Ramleela at Ayodhya, and Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima at the Varanasi ghats, are eastern sacred-city peaks.
- Prayagraj Kumbh and Magh Mela at the Sangam are the largest periodic gatherings; Makar Sankranti and Kartik baths run on the Ganga–Yamuna every year.
- Dussehra Ramleela, Diwali, Navratri, and Chhath in Purvanchal are household and river festivals across the plain.
- Taj Mahotsav at Agra, Lucknow Mahotsav, and Ganga Mahotsav at Varanasi are state tourism festivals built on the same ritual calendar.
Other communities and a limit
- Eid and Muharram, especially Lucknow’s azadari, are central to Awadh public culture.
- Buddha Purnima at Sarnath, Jain festivals at Deogarh and Kaushambi belts, and gurpurabs in the west show that UP festivals are not only Hindu.
- Christmas in cantonment and city churches, and local urs at Sufi dargahs, complete a plural mention.
- The list is illustrative; almost every district adds a jela or cattle fair, so the 8-mark mention should stay with named state peaks.

Conclusion
Festivals of Uttar Pradesh are Braj Holi and Janmashtami, Ayodhya Ramleela, Varanasi Dev Deepawali, Prayagraj Kumbh, Purvanchal Chhath, and tourism mahotsavs, together with Eid, Muharram, Buddha Purnima, and urs. Place and community both define the calendar.

Describe the salient features of Mauryan Art and Architecture.
Indian culture
Mauryan art is court sandstone: Ashokan pillars, the Sarnath lion capital, and polished yaksha figures. Architecture adds Barabar Ajivika caves, early stupas at Sanchi and Sarnath, and timber palaces at Pataliputra. High polish and animal capitals are the signature, not later temple shikhara. The style is imperial and mixed religious, not only Buddhist monastery building.

Throw light on the nature of Renaissance in Uttar Pradesh in the 19th Century.
Uttar Pradesh — history, culture and society
The nineteenth-century UP Renaissance was regional: Hindi letters at Banaras, Urdu at Lucknow, and the Aligarh movement. Bharatendu’s print and the Hindi–Urdu controversy made language a public question. Sir Syed’s MAO College, 1875, is the main educational monument of the Muslim strand. Sabhas, Arya Samaj, and girls’ schooling made it social as well as literary. It is not a copy of the Italian Renaissance.

Illustrate the contributions of nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the struggle for the freedom of press.
Modern Indian history
Tilak used Kesari (Marathi) and Mahratta (English) from 1881 as nationalist organisation. The 1897 Rand-plague trial and the 1908 Mandalay sentence made him the leading press prisoner. Section 124A was shown as a gag on political comment, not only on violence. Home Rule later carried the same papers into mass swaraj teaching. Press freedom for him was a political right, not a commercial privilege.
