Introduction

Uttar Pradesh irrigates more cropped land than any other Indian state, by a mix of canals in the doab, tubewells in the west and centre, wells and tanks in Bundelkhand, and lift schemes on residual tracts. That mix is why the Green Revolution stuck in the west and why the east still argues about water reliability.

Means of irrigation

  • Canals: Upper and Lower Ganga canals, Eastern Yamuna, Agra canal, Sarda (Sharda) system, Ramganga, Saryu Nahar, Gandak, and branches that water the Ganga–Yamuna doab and parts of the east.
  • Tubewells, state and private, are now the largest source in western and central UP, using the thick alluvial aquifer.
  • Masonry wells and boring remain important where the water table is reachable and power is irregular.
  • Tanks, ahars, and check-dams matter in Bundelkhand and the Vindhyan south, where hard rock limits cheap tubewells.
  • Lift irrigation, pump-on-river, and pond renovation (including MNREGA and farm-pond schemes) fill gaps that gravity canals miss.
  • The spatial pattern is canal-plus-tubewell in the west, more rain-and-canal uncertainty in the east, and tank-well dependence in the south.

Role in agricultural development

  • Assured water made the wheat–rice and wheat–sugarcane packages of western UP possible: high-yield seed, fertiliser, and double cropping need irrigation more than slogans.
  • Cropping intensity, summer (zaid) vegetables, and dairy fodder in the west rest on tubewell reliability.
  • Canal commands raised land values and a kulak-peasant class, which is agrarian development with a social edge.
  • Irrigation also created waterlogging and salinity in poorly drained doab patches, and groundwater decline where tubewells outrun recharge, so development is not costless.
  • Eastern UP’s lower tubewell density and flood-prone canals mean irrigation’s development role is still incomplete: rice is often rain-timed, and rabi is riskier.
  • Bundelkhand’s tank-and-well irrigation, if restored, is drought insurance rather than a second Green Revolution; without it, distress migration follows failed rains.
  • Public canal maintenance, power for pumps, and conjunctive use (canal plus groundwater) decide whether irrigation remains a development tool or a depletion trap.

Conclusion

UP’s irrigation means are canals, tubewells, wells, tanks, and lift. They underwrote western agricultural development and cropping intensity; the east and Bundelkhand show that the same tools, if thin or depleting, leave development unfinished.

Freedom struggle

UP was a core theatre of 1857 at Meerut, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Jhansi. HRA was organised at Kanpur in 1924; Kakori in 1925 made Bismil and Ashfaqulla national names. Azad ran HSRA work from Allahabad until 1931. The contribution is morale, organisation, and colonial alarm. Cadre action did not replace the mass movements of 1920–42.

The Industrial Revolution multiplied energy through coal, steam, and the factory. It created a wage working class and an industrial bourgeoisie, not only new machines. Migration, child labour, and mill towns remade family and daily life. Unions, factory acts, and Chartism were social answers to that change. Living standards moved unevenly; the revolution was socio-economic, not merely technical.
