Describe the advantages of India being a composite culture society.

Topic: Indian society and culture. Syllabus: Salient features of Indian Society and culture. Same official PYQ from year-wise 2020 and Indian society and culture.

Revision summary

Composite culture is shared public life among many faiths, languages, and regions. Bhakti–Sufi, Hindustani arts, and Eighth Schedule languages are living forms of that mix. The Constitution roofs it with secularism and cultural rights. Advantages are federal unity, lower conflict costs, tourism and crafts, and several reform vocabularies. The mix is an advantage only while the state still protects difference.

Model answer

Introduction

India’s composite culture is the long mixing of languages, faiths, and regional customs, often called Ganga–Jamuni tehzeeb in the northern plains. The advantages appear in political unity, social skills, and a wider economic and civilisational range.

Body

What composite culture is

  • Composite culture is not one folk costume; it is shared public life in which Sanskritic, Islamic, tribal, Christian, Sikh, and regional streams borrow festivals, food, music, and architecture without erasing difference.
  • Bhakti and Sufi saints, Urdu–Hindi, Hindustani music, Indo-Islamic building from the Qutb to Lucknow Imambaras, and the Eighth Schedule’s many languages are working examples, not museum pieces.
  • The Preamble’s liberty, equality, fraternity, and secularism, with Articles 25–30 and 51A, give this mixing a constitutional roof rather than leaving it only to custom.

Advantages

  • Political advantage: a federal republic can hold many nations-in-the-making because people already practise nested identities — language, faith, region — without a single ethnic test of citizenship.
  • Social advantage: everyday bilingualism, inter-community markets, and shared pilgrim towns such as Prayagraj, Ajmer, and Varanasi lower the cost of living together and give civil society brokers in a crisis.
  • Economic and soft-power advantage: tourism, crafts, cinema, and the diaspora sell a plural India; internal migration works better where host cities already know mixed neighbourhoods.
  • Intellectual advantage: several legal and philosophical traditions — Dharmashastra, Indo-Persian adab, tribal custom, modern rights — give reformers more than one vocabulary against monopoly of any one orthodoxy.
  • The limit must be stated: composite culture is an advantage only while the state protects minorities and the poor; riots and majoritarian campaigns show that mixing is a resource, not an automatic peace.

Conclusion

A composite-culture society gives India federal glue, everyday skills of coexistence, and a broad civilisational market. The advantage is real in the Constitution and in towns of mixed memory; it lasts only if law, not nostalgia, keeps the mix open.

  • Is composite culture the same as the absence of conflict?

No. It is a resource for living together. Communal violence shows that the resource can be wasted without law and politics.

  • Does composite culture deny distinct religions?

No. It describes borrowing and shared space. Distinct rituals remain; the advantage is that citizenship does not require one ritual.

Write a note on the town planning of Harappan civilization period.

History of Indian Culture

Mature Harappan cities used an orthogonal street plan and standardised baked brick. A citadel or raised platform and a lower town organised civic space. Covered street drains, house baths, and wells are the core of water planning. The Great Bath, warehouse blocks, Lothal’s basin, and Dholavira’s reservoirs are public works. Planning varies by site and does not require a palace or great temple to be urban.

Evaluate the views of Gandhi on the Varna system.

Freedom struggle

Gandhi treated varna as four duties, not as ranked jati or untouchability. He called untouchability a sin and organised the Harijan Sevak Sangh after 1932. Temple entry and the Poona Pact were his political field; Ambedkar still rejected birth-varna. Later Gandhi accepted inter-caste marriage and attacked caste hierarchy more sharply. The ethical gain is real; the structural limit is that hereditary calling can freeze labour.

Write a critical note on the Foreign Policy of Mussolini, the leader of Fascism in Italy.

History of Indian Culture

Fascist foreign policy sought Mediterranean empire and revision of 1919. Corfu 1923 and Locarno 1925 show early mix of bullying and conservative diplomacy. Ethiopia 1935–36 and League sanctions turned Italy toward Nazi Germany. The Axis, Anti-Comintern Pact, Albania 1939, and Pact of Steel bound Rome to Berlin. War in 1940 exposed weak means; Italy became a junior partner and the regime fell in 1943.
