Essay map

Opening scene

Anecdote

A procession and a counter-procession, a clerk who asks a name before a file. Secular politics is not ‘no religion in the street’. It is a state that does not pick a sacred winner. 2021 India still needs that clerk to forget the name. Secular politics is a file without a surname test. Need is a mixed street. Challenge is a vote that sells a god.

Keep this in every paragraph

One stand

  • Need: 25–28, a civil code debate without a rant, a school. Challenge: a lynching, a conversion panic, a minority tokenism.

Use once, in a scene — do not dump names

Quotes to earn

  • Ambedkar

A civic state — faith as a right, not a government.

What the line is asking

  • Secular politics: power that treats faiths as equal before law.
  • Needs and challenges: two lists, then a spine.

Need / challenge

  • A uniform civil floor vs a custom that cages.
  • A temple-mosque TV that eats a drain budget.

The counter

Imported ‘French’ laïcité that cannot see Indian plurality. And a secularism that is only an election arithmetic.

File without a surname

  • Equal citizenship, a personal law debate, a riot that is also a campaign.
  • Need: a police that is not a community’s militia.
  • Challenge: a dog-whistle, a census rumour, a history as a weapon.
  • Secular is a method of the state, not a hatred of faith.

Drop one peg where it fits — not a data dump

Value addition

  • Art. 25–28 / 15 The secular file.
  • SR Bommai cousin Secularism as basic — one nod.
  • Riot / police Challenge as a street.
  • Personal law Need as a floor for the last woman.

Last 8–10 lines in the exam

Last paragraph

Secular politics is needed because a mixed street cannot be governed as a shrine. It is challenged whenever a vote is sold as a god, a police as a side, a history as a wound to be avenged this week. The method is a file without a surname test: a school, a ration, a court. It is not a hatred of temples or mosques; it is a refusal to let either become the state. Close on that file. Needs are a calm street; challenges are a campaign that wants a fire. Write both. That is a republic’s politics.
