A clerk smiles when a widow is told to come tomorrow. The smile is not joy. It is the chosen vehicle for a refusal he will not put in a sentence. The line is that vehicle: useful in a drawing room, dangerous in a queue.

What the line is asking

The counter
A child, a defendant, a disaster warning need a sentence, not a smile. Ambiguity is a tool of the strong if the weak cannot decode it. Plain language (a reasoned order) is the opposite vehicle — still kind, not blunt for sport.
