Revision summary
U.P. has three ecozones: Terai–Bhabar, Gangetic Plain, Vindhyan–Bundelkhand. Terai is wet sal-grass with tiger, elephant, swamp deer, and river fauna. The plain is farmed alluvium whose wild life is rivers, jheels, dolphin, turtles, and sarus. The south is dry deciduous forest, tanks, and Chambal ravines with bear, wolf, and gharial. Each zone needs a different fix: corridor, flow, and drought-forest.
Model answer
Introduction
Uttar Pradesh’s living map is three ecozones, not one canal plain. Terai–Bhabar is wet forest and grass against Nepal. The Gangetic Plain is farm, river, and jheel. Vindhyan–Bundelkhand is dry hill, ravine, and residual forest. Habitat sets the flora; flora and water set the fauna.
Body
Terai–Bhabar ecozone
- Habitat: high rainfall, high water table, bhabar pebbles that swallow streams, terai marshes, sal forest, and tall elephant grass; frost is rare, flood and waterlogging are not.
- Flora: sal, teak plantations, khair–sissoo on new alluvium, grasslands (elephant grass, Saccharum types), and swamp edge herbs.
- Fauna: tiger, elephant, rhino (reintroduced pockets), swamp deer, hog deer, hispid hare, Bengal florican, gharial and Gangetic dolphin in Girwa–Ghaghara; this is the big-mammal ecozone.
- Condition today: fragmentation by cane and paddy, railway and road cuts, and grass-fire or grass-loss that starve swamp deer.
Gangetic Plain ecozone
- Habitat: deep alluvium, monsoon rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gomti, Rapti), oxbows, tals, and almost complete conversion to agriculture; natural habitat is now the river edge, floodplain pocket, and notified jheel.
- Flora: little climax forest left; mango, mahua, babul, dhak, and planted eucalyptus–poplar sit with crops; wetland macrophytes in sanctuaries such as Nawabganj and Samaspur.
- Fauna: Gangetic dolphin and turtles in main stems, sarus crane in paddy–wetland mosaics, migratory ducks, mugger in some rivers, and a thin jackal–nilgai farm fauna; gharial is largely a Chambal (plain-ravine edge) story.
- Condition today: pollution, sand mining, river training, and eutrophic jheels; the ecozone feeds India and still hosts river endangered species if flow and sewage are managed.
Vindhyan–Bundelkhand ecozone
- Habitat: Archaean and Vindhyan rocks, seasonal streams, tanks, ravines (Chambal–Yamuna), dry deciduous and thorn forest, hot summers and drought.
- Flora: teak and mixed dry deciduous (tendu, palash, kardhai, khair), grasslands on plateaus, and ravine scrub; sal is not the dominant terai story here.
- Fauna: sloth bear, leopard, wolf and hyena in ravines, blackbuck in open patches, gharial and rare turtles on Chambal sandbanks, and a returning tiger landscape at Ranipur–Kaimoor.
- Condition today: mining dust, fuelwood, and tank silt; ravines are both a gharial fortress and a degraded farm edge.
Reading the three together
- Do not plant a terai tiger answer on a Bundelkhand question, or a sal list on the doab.
- Conservation is zone-specific: grass and corridor in terai, river flow in the plain, tanks and dry forest in the south.

Conclusion
The three ecozones are Terai–Bhabar, the Gangetic Plain, and Vindhyan–Bundelkhand. Habitat runs from marsh-sal to farm-river to dry hill and ravine. Flora follows that water. Fauna follows the flora: tiger and swamp deer in the terai, dolphin and sarus in the plain, bear, wolf, and gharial in the south. Each zone is damaged in its own way — flood-fragmentation, sewage, drought-mining.

-
Is the Chambal part of the Gangetic Plain ecozone?
The river joins the Yamuna–Ganga system, but the ravine habitat is dry and rocky. Treat it with the Vindhyan–Bundelkhand / ravine ecozone in a three-zone answer.
-
Why is sal not listed for Bundelkhand?
Sal needs the moist terai-plain edge. Bundelkhand’s climax is dry deciduous and thorn, not terai sal.

What are the policies and programmes of the Government of Uttar Pradesh to promote MSMEs?
Schemes, skill and investment
U.P. MSME promotion is a policy stack, not one scheme. ODOP specialises each district product and shared branding. Industrial policy tools are stamp duty, electricity duty, and SGST relief. Invest U.P. and Nivesh Mitra shorten the permission queue. Budget-funded flatted factories, CFCs, artisan and credit windows complete the offer.

Critically analyse the extent to which infrastructural development in Uttar Pradesh has contributed to economic diversification and regional equity.
Schemes, skill and investment
Expressways, Jewar and other airports, metros, and freight doors have widened U.P.’s sector mix. The Defence Industrial Corridor adds a manufacturing story beyond sugar and grain. Purvanchal and Bundelkhand roads are the equity bet. Western U.P. still concentrates private capital. Diversification and equity remain incomplete without last-mile power, skills, and MoU conversion.

Identify the Ramsar sites of Uttar Pradesh and describe their features.
Economy, budget and industry of UP
U.P. has ten Ramsar sites on the Gangetic floodplain. The Upper Ganga Brijghat–Narora stretch is the riverine first site. Six 2019 bird sanctuaries sit in the central plains, plus Sur Sarovar, Haiderpur, and Bakhira. Shared features are monsoon wetlands, migratory birds, and sarus landscapes. A Ramsar tag still needs sewage, weed, and encroachment control.
